International organization stops illegal hunting
CABS (Committee Against Bird Slaughter) is an international organization working to stop illegal hunting and trapping of birds. One of their most important areas is Malta, a central passage for thousands of migratory birds each year. Through monitoring, fieldwork, and cooperation with authorities, CABS has contributed to hundreds of convictions and strengthened protection for birds. The organization uses drones and cameras, among other tools, to document crimes and assist police work. Their efforts have increased public awareness and influenced legislation in the region.
Remaining challenges
Despite significant progress, Malta remains an attractive place for poachers. Limited resources of local authorities and strong hunting traditions complicate the work, and continuous monitoring is required throughout the migration season. CABS therefore works continuously to recruit volunteers and raise funds to continue their efforts.
A safer journey for birds
CABS builds its work on international cooperation, scientifically-based methods, and respect for nature. Thanks to their long-term efforts, poaching in Malta has decreased by about 90% over the past 25 years. Kolmården Foundation supported CABS' work in 2022 and continues to contribute to their important efforts. Together we make a difference – both at home and around the world!
